It’s 813, Kim and Dave, heart of Hobart. 75% of Australian high school girls wish they were thinner, and more than one in five young men say that body image is their number one concern. Now, I wanted to chat to Brooke because it’s close to my heart at the moment with a couple of girls close to me affected by body image issues.
Mason, you were part of this crew that created Fresh Faced Friday. Tell us about what it is.
We need Fresh Faced Friday because there are so many kids out there that feel like they’re not enough. They feel like they have to act a certain way or dress a certain way in order to be accepted. I think it would be awesome to live in a world where you could just be accepted for being who you are, doing what you like doing, and being comfortable in your own skin.
All those negative things in your mind, all those thoughts that hold you back—those things that make you feel like you can’t go out—say for me, my cold sores, my eczema, or when my hair is greasy or I have pimples. I feel like a lesser version of myself. If you write all those things down, you’ll realize that they’re probably not that different from the next person. If you tear them up, it makes you feel like you can cope with those things and get back out into the world.
The more we talk about things that we’re insecure about, the more we realize the normality of it. I think the tearing up of that piece of paper is just so satisfying.
A little bit of positivity and a little bit of self-belief can go a long way. If you go out with your head held high, feeling like you’re killing it, then how can someone judge you? You’ve got so much self-confidence and self-belief that they’ll just rebound off you.
Yeah, I reckon if you just stop judging yourself and judging everyone else, and you just have a little look around, you realize that the world’s actually a beautiful place and that’s what we should focus on.
