WEBSITEOh, sorry, you just caught me manifesting my ultimate Spider-Man with me and five of my besties.
Health and well-being are very on-trend right now, and sometimes it can feel like a whole bunch of superfood gibberish. We’re here to give you some simple, accessible, practical tips to look after yourself and truly adult in the health department.
Tip 1: Move around a bit and do things you actually like
When it comes to fitness and exercise, it’s not all about that shedding or shredding life. Try starting with a few active things that you actually feel good doing, like walking, dancing, or commuting by bike, if that’s your jam. It’s hard for me because my jam is jam.
Tip 2: Health insurance – what the heck even is health insurance?
Do you need private health insurance? Do you need ambulance cover? Should I even get Medicare? These are all legit adult questions.
As for that last one, check out the links in our resource section. They explain that the public health system, Medicare, covers most things in Australia, but not all things, and you may need to wait for some things in the public system.
Tip 3: Find a good doctor
I’m afraid it’s not good news, Mr. Johnson. Finding a good doctor who you feel comfortable with, who asks the right questions, and helps you feel safe is an A+ part of adulting.
And if you’ve ever wondered about bulk billing, it means the government steps up and covers the full cost of your appointment. Free healthcare! Whew! You can usually find out about bulk-billing clinics in your area with some quick Googling.
Tip 4: Looking after your mental health
We know that one in four young people are experiencing a mental health challenge at any given time in Australia. Looking after your mental health might mean being more active, eating right, taking time for self-care, and reaching out to your mates.
Why not make a little list of three things you can do to stay connected and healthy, and try to practice these regularly? If you do need someone to talk to, try Lifeline or check out Headspace. We also have more info in our resources section.
Tip 5: Healthy relationships
One of the most important parts of being a grown-ass adult is having good people around you and building some real, healthy relationships. These may be friendships, mentors, sexual relationships, party pals—whoever they are, make sure you’re surrounded by people who respect you, help you feel safe, and support you to be a good human.
Speaking to someone about your problems can be the first steps to a solution.
