Laugh and Learn – Puberty Part 2

What’s up, man? You look worried. You okay?

No. I’m not. I think I’m losing my mind.

How come?

Well, you know Matilda in our English class?

Yeah.

I think I like her, man.

So? (Confused)

No, I mean I like her, like her. You know? I liiiiike her.

What’s wrong with that?

What the… Are you serious? She’s a girl! Liking a girl goes against everything I’ve ever known, everything I’ve ever been. It’s unnatural, it’s weird, and it’s sick. I swear I’m losing my mind.

No, you’re not. You’re just reaching puberty.

It’s okay to start to like girls.

Okay, so what about girl germs?

Not even a thing.

So I’m not going mad?

No.

Cool.

Oh, what about how I keep my toenail clippings in a jar next to my bed?

(Guitar plays)

You get mood changes. Not everyone will become moody or anxious necessarily, but a lot of people do, maybe most. You have mood swings and become more emotional.

Yeah, you get very selfish.

Yeah. Self-involved. (Laughter)

But um, yeah, everyone’s going through it, and it helps to notice that.

Yeah, I think that’s normal because there’s so much going on in your body that it’s normal to be a bit stressed and take a bit of anger out on other people. Talking to someone, talking to a friend about it, is the best way to relieve it. And playing sport. Getting out there, doing something. Gets your mind off what’s going on.

Surprisingly enough, my parents were actually really good at dealing with me and my emotional states. Specifically my mum. She was like, “It’s okay, I understand what she’s going through.”

“We’ll just let it fly.”
