WEBSITEOh, did you hear about that kid Rowan in Year 8?
No, what about him?
He caught puberty, so he went home on Friday, normal kid, came back Monday—he was a foot taller, with an Adam’s apple, deep voice, smelling like old socks, and he’d grown a beard.
Okay, Freddy, you don’t catch puberty. It’s something that happens naturally over time.
But that kid, he… (voice breaking) he… (deep voice) he sneezed on me this morning on the bus.
Oh no, I’ve caught… (voice breaking) the puberty! Ah no, I got puberty!
(Deep voice) I’ve got puberty.
Okay, Freddy, where are you going?
To the sick bay.
They can’t do anything… I don’t want to smell like old socks, Freddy!
Freddy…
(Guitar plays)
Puberty is… I’d say a period of change that lasts probably most of your teenage years. You go from being a little boy to being a man. I go from a child to something that might resemble an adult one day. Some males go through puberty all the way up until they’re 21, apparently.
Yeah, I can see that happening, that’d be Freddy.
Yep. Sorry, Freddy.
They differ from boys to girls. You become more muscular. Height changes that occur a lot of the time, the shape of your body, hair growth, skin as well—lots of kids get pimples. And your voice begins to go deeper. For females, your period starts, body hair, pimples, height.
I would love to imagine you before puberty though, with like a little… or if you still had this same voice, little Tama walking around like, “Hi, I’m Tama, oh yeah, I’m this many.” I think mine was like, (high-pitched voice) “Hi, I’m Tama.”
Puberty is nothing to be scared about in my opinion. It’s a time of change and it’s an important part of growing up. I went through a stage of being scared of, you know, like pimples and stuff, but everyone does it. So if you are scared, don’t be worried, everyone does it.
