Get to Know Cannabis

Cannabis is a cannabinoid drug. The number of different cannabinoids in the Cannabis sativa plant is still being researched, but it primarily contains the psychoactive cannabinoid THC and the non-psychoactive cannabinoid CBD.

The leaves, flowers, stems, or seeds from the cannabis plant containing THC—which causes that feeling of being high—can be smoked, inhaled, or eaten.

Some other commonly known names for cannabis include weed, marijuana, pot, bud, grass—the list goes on.

Some of the effects of cannabis use can include relaxation, laughter, excitement, a dry mouth, slower reflexes, bloodshot eyes, and even anxiety and paranoia. Some of the longer-term effects can include anxiety, memory loss, and the development of psychosis.

If you can, avoid mixing it with tobacco, as this can lead to nicotine dependence. If you are using a bong, make sure to clean it—it’s really easy to do. You can use a dishwashing tablet and some hot water, swirl it around, use a bottle brush, and it’s clean.

If possible, avoid using homemade plastic bongs because you’re inhaling plastic chemicals. Also, avoid inhaling too deeply and holding your breath—this doesn’t increase the effectiveness of the THC at all, but it can contribute to lung and respiratory issues down the track.
