Get to Know – Amphetamines

Amphetamines are psycho-stimulant drugs, which means they speed up the messages travelling between your brain and your body. Some types of amphetamines can be prescribed by doctors to treat things such as ADHD and narcolepsy.

The appearance of amphetamines varies from a powder-like substance to tablet form, even crystals and capsules. They may be packaged in aluminium foil, plastic bags, or even small balloons when sold illegally. Illegally produced amphetamines can be a mix of different drugs, binding agents, caffeine, and sugar. New psychoactive substances can even be added.

Regular use of amphetamines may eventually cause reduced appetite and extreme weight loss, restless sleep, dry mouth, dental problems, regular colds and flu, anxiety, and paranoia, to name a few.

Harm minimization strategies with amphetamines include starting low and going slow. Always wait to feel the effects before taking more. Try to eat before you use, while you’re using, and after you use. Stay hydrated, and always sip water.

The regular use of amphetamines can increase the risks of heart attack or other heart problems. Using less frequently or using smaller amounts of amphetamines may reduce this risk.
