What do you do if you think your friend is in an unsafe or abusive relationship?

Your friend could be in an unsafe relationship if you notice:

  • Their partner monitoring what they’re doing, who they’re with, and where they are.
  • Physical injuries with explanations that don’t seem quite right.
  • Their partner putting them down about their ideas, appearance, and hopes.
  • They tell you about being pressured to have sex when and how they don’t want to.

You can start the conversation by:

  • Reaching out and asking if they are okay.
  • Reassuring them that you believe them.
  • Asking them what they want and need from you at this time.
  • Listening respectfully and without judgment.
  • Helping them access support if they want to.

If your friend lives in the Gold Coast or Beenleigh region, they can contact the Domestic Violence Prevention Centre at 5532 9000 or visit domesticviolence.com.au.
