Sharni’s Journey to Employment
I was 17. I had no idea how this would affect me. I was alone, as well as being out of home at the time. I didn’t really have much support. I’ve struggled to get a job because of not having enough experience, not having enough training. There’s been all sorts of battles, whether it’s health or relationships. Once I got that opportunity, I was like, you know what, let’s just do it—let’s try it. Having the job has changed my life in so many ways: financially, mentally, physically, and the place I’m working at is absolutely positive. They’ve provided training, they’ve provided outside work support. I would say it’s like home at my place. I love it.
Giving young people an opportunity to do some trials or training definitely helps. Social Ventures Australia’s Rebuilding the Career Ladder initiative works with employers that are supporting young people from diverse economic backgrounds, giving them the support they need to move into work. I’m very proud of myself for being able to chuck myself in the deep end when I need it. It’s definitely been a long journey, and yet I’m only 23. Rain doesn’t last forever; there will be sunshine at some point.
