Ever made comments or content in the name of jokes or ‘trolling’? Is it just some light hearted fun, an inside joke, or is it going too far and becoming bullying? Why do we even do this in the first place? That’s why we created In Real Life (IRL), our 100% youth-created series that’s reimagining online issues through the eyes of young people. In this episode of #IRL, Michael reflects on trolling, online abuse and understanding what motivates those who perpetrate it. Why do people choose to troll?

Things are, the main reason that a lot of young men go online purely to troll people, is for attention.

Whether that’s from people that they don’t know online and seeking validation,

or it could be among their friends, just trying to seem like they’re cool or whatever.

And others do it for amusement and that feeling of power over others. Usually, those sort of people who just go online to troll, they have a lot of issues at home and with themselves, and they see trolling as a way of gaining more control over their lives.

But a lot of the time, it actually affects other people more than they realize. Something that can take them just a couple of minutes to do—let’s say, just like any sort of bullying or trolling—can actually affect other people in a serious way, and they may not realize that.

And I think maybe it’s because they don’t care about how much it affects them, or they don’t realise.

But that’s why I think trolling hasn’t really died down since the internet started, since it was conceived.

And some people just do it to get a reaction out of others and just, again, to feel like they have some sort of control.

Alright.

Yeah.
