Keeping grounded in my roots after migrating to Australia

Hi, I’m Emanuel. I’m from West Africa, Ghana, and I’ve been living in this country for seven years.

Being part of the migrant refugee community means a lot to me. It embodies who I am, reminds me of my roots, and keeps me connected to where I come from. When you’re in a different country or on unfamiliar soil, it’s easy to feel lost in your identity as you adapt to new surroundings.

When I first came here, it was overwhelming. I was 19, and at school, I was the oldest student in my class. It made fitting in difficult. Over time, some of my friends’ parents didn’t really understand me, and they even asked their kids to stop spending time with me.

At the same time, I was navigating a major turning point in my life—choosing my career. I told my parents I wanted to be a visual artist, but that decision came with consequences. They had envisioned me becoming a lawyer, pastor, or plumber. One of my parents stopped speaking to me for a long time because of my choice.

It was a tough period, and my mental health suffered. But I found support in my visual art teacher and drama teacher. They made me feel safe, listened to me, and helped me express myself. Their guidance made a big difference. As Les Brown says, “Asking for help doesn’t mean you’re weak; it means you want to remain strong.” Reaching out for help was one of the best decisions I made.

One thing I admire about my community is its resilience. Despite the challenges we face, we continue to push forward. My roots and culture play a big role in keeping me grounded. At home, we eat African food, speak our dialects, and my mom shares stories from back home. Those traditions remind me of who I am and where I come from.

I’m proud of the journey that’s shaped me into the person I am today. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that you’re never alone. Don’t be afraid to share your story or talk to someone you trust. Remember, there are people who will stand with you as you face life’s challenges.
