Joel Thompson shares his advice on gambling responsibly
I grew up witnessing the harmful effects of gambling, seeing both my family and friends punt regularly. I remember as a kid being dragged to the club by different family members and watching them spend all their pay on the pokies. It was tough.
Fast-forward to today, and I still witness my family and friends gamble well beyond their means. Don’t get me wrong—I like a punt from time to time. It can be a good form of entertainment, but you have to stick to a budget and not gamble beyond your means.
Seeing people I care about spend countless hours gambling has made me realize that when it stops being fun, that’s when it’s time to take a break and stop.
If you think your gambling is getting out of hand or you’re concerned about a loved one, there’s plenty of resources out there to help. Visit the Responsible Gambling website to find out more.
