Helping young mob stand tall

You know what? It’s important for young people to have a strong sense of identity.

As a parent or a carer, you play an important role in building confidence and strength in our young people.

Helping young Indigenous people feel good about who they are and their heritage is so important.

It’s important for their wellbeing and building resilience.

As a young fella growing up, knowing my heritage and my culture has been a real important part of my life—helping me feel strong in who I am and knowing my identity.

A great way of supporting young people as they’re growing up:

Young people are so influenced by the people they hang around—like their family, their friends.

So it’s vital that having a good support network will really help their wellbeing and resilience.

Growing up, parents and carers are the biggest role models in our lives.

Having a good relationship with my parents and other trusted adults in my community has been a huge part of giving me confidence within myself.

We set boundaries for our young people.

As an Indigenous boy growing up, my parents told me not to chase that little bird, because that little bird would take me away from my camp.

Having trusted people around to guide me was so crucial for my upbringing.

They didn’t always necessarily agree with what I was doing, but at the end of the day, they supported my decisions and backed me all the way.

Be a good listener before you talk to our young people.

Sharing your cultural knowledge and being a good role model will help our young people stand tall.
