GAMING: How can I avoid hate in gaming?
Ash: All right, go!
M: No!
Ash: M, I’m coming for you.
M: So, so close!
Ash: Thank you.
M: St, thank you.
Ash: I hate losing. I’m not even a gamer anyway.
M: Oh, come on, Ash. Please, mate. Gaming obviously doesn’t have to be some shooter game. It could just be playing Mario Kart or virtual board games.
Ash: Yeah, my favorite type of games are like, um, sports games, you know? I play them with my mates. But to be honest, for me, I’m pretty competitive, so I can get pretty fierce.
M: Right. I understand how it’s really easy for people to say things they really don’t mean while they’re gaming. But I reckon that kind of rage is pretty dangerous.
Ash: Totally. I’ve definitely had moments gaming where I get so angry, and I think I know in those moments I’m not actually enjoying myself anymore. Like, I’m taking it way too seriously.
M: Totally. I know it sounds super corny, but if I ever get mad while I’m playing, I literally put my remote down, force myself to go get a drink or have something to eat, and then come back and continue playing.
Ash: Wow, I love that you’re actually doing it. I’m kind of one of those people that just can’t pause my game when I’m really into it. So I’ve actually done this before—I’ll, like, at the end, put on some heavy metal and just seriously thrash out over the room.
M: Exactly! Like, a few people have raged at me before in gaming, and to be honest, I can’t take it that seriously. I tend to brush it off. But I do have mates who take this stuff to heart all the time. They find it really hurtful.
Ash: Totally. And no one deserves to be cyberbullied, right? So if you’re copping hate online while you’re gaming, or you’re seeing it happen, I reckon there’s some stuff you could do so you don’t just sit around and watch it.
M: Yeah, you know, I’ve had people just tell me to turn it off, especially when I was younger, and it used to really frustrate me.
Ash: Oh, actually, have you ever had that moment where you’ve been playing and someone’s come across and turned off your console? Sorry to bring you there.
M: Yeah, right. You shouldn’t have to stop gaming in order to avoid hate.
Ash: Yeah, there’s definitely some things you could do. Like, for example, don’t feed the trolls. There are some gamers—let’s just call them trolls—who literally sabotage your game and hate on you online just for your reaction.
M: Right.
Ash: I mean, at PERC, we just don’t think you should give them a reaction at all. Sometimes it can get you mad, so if that does happen, you could, I don’t know, sing the alphabet backwards or something. But seriously, I reckon just reporting, blocking, or muting them. I mean, you just don’t need them taking up your precious game time, right?
M: Yeah, right. And you can block them in any game. If you don’t know how, just Google it.
Ash: Yeah. And you know, some people can brush it off, like you, but some people can’t. And that’s okay as well.
M: Yeah, I mean, it’s pretty simple though, right? Hate’s hate, no matter how competitive things start to get. So I guess the challenge is standing by your mates if you’re seeing hate online, but it’s also challenging yourself. If you get rage, find whatever works for you to challenge that.
Ash: Do you want to play? If I play, you’ll probably lose.
M: You’re going to sit this one out. M can play. Two controllers?
Ash: All right, okay. Shotgun Paige.
