How To Adult – First Day At Your New Gig

Oh, hello there! So, you’ve scored yourself a new job—high five! (I’ll just imagine that you high-fived me. Burn, yeah!) Anyway, here are a few tips for making it through and still having the job afterward.

Tip 1: Arrive prepared and on time.
Sometimes it’s good to get to work on time, and your first day is one of those times. If you’re really trying to impress, you could even arrive on time every day. To make sure you do get in on time, plan your route beforehand and try to be there a bit early, just in case there are any delays. You know what the traffic’s like in the town and/or city you’re from.

Oh, and if you need to tap into caffeine in the morning, make sure you factor in time for that too.
“Yeah, hi! I’m one double-shot skinny flat mac with gowalla, please. And if you could just do it quickly because I am—yep—late!”

Tip 2: Dress up.
No, not that fancy!
[Cut to someone in a ball gown.]
Alright, so maybe have a bit of fun, but it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. You’ll quickly get a feel for what level of attire you’ll need to fit in.

Tip 3: Do your research.
A sure way to impress your colleagues is to do a bit of reading about the company before you start. Check out your workmates on LinkedIn. You can find out about their roles, read about projects they’ve worked on recently, and learn about what the business is up to. Knowing some of this stuff on day one will show that you’re interested and eager to hit the ground running.

Tip 4: Get involved.
Jump in headfirst and get amongst it. Make yourself heard in meetings, get involved in the water cooler chit-chat, and sign up for the office Dungeons and Dragons tournament. These are great ways to get to know the people you’ll be working with—and a good chance for you to give yourself a new nickname.
“Oh hi, I’m Jess, aka The Cobra.

Follow all these tips to the letter, and we guarantee you’ll have a great first day on the job.

Oh, don’t worry, new best friends—the Cobra will be with you in a sec. Gotta go! Bye!
[Music fades out.]
